Werribee Open Range Zoo
What a great way to end the year with a visit to Werribee Open Range Zoo. The whole school packed up and headed north to the Savannahs of Werribee to spend some time with the animals courtesy of Aireys Inlet PS Parents and Friends, and Sustainability Victoria and the Resource Smart Schools Program.
We all had a wonderful time wandering around, going on Safari and learning about animals and plants from the experts at the zoo. Some of the highlights were getting up close to the Lions (behind the glass!!), watching the Gorillas chase each other around and trying to spot a hippo. Plus the students had fun climbing, swinging, and running around while the safari bus ride saw some of us get up close and personal with a very large Rhino.
Werribee Zoo works with groups across the globe with a strong commitment to the conservation of wildlife. Aireys Inlet students actively promote and participate in programs run by the zoo such as “They’re Calling On You”. Currently, we are collecting old mobile phones for the program which has been running since October 2008. It raises funds through the recycling of mobile phone phones. So far, the program has collected more than 164,000 phones and raised more than $271,000 for conservation. Funds raised support Zoos Victoria and our conservation partners, Gorilla Doctors, who provide life-saving medical care to fragile wild gorilla populations in Africa. You can help by dropping your old mobile phones in the box at the front office to will be collected by the zoo.
A big thank you to all the people who helped out and a big thank you to all our students. Our students/your kids received praise from the zoo staff for their wonderful behaviour. Great Work Aireys Inlet Primary School.
